Most households here have not turned a front door key in years. You press the button on the visor, the big door goes up, you park, and you walk into the house through the service door in the garage wall. That is simply how this town lives. It works until the afternoon it does not. The opener quits mid-travel. The power drops on a hundred-and-four degree day and takes the whole block with it. The nine-volt in the keypad on the door frame has been fading since spring and finally goes flat. Nobody in the house remembers the code, because nobody has typed it since the installer set it. Or somebody pulled the red release cord months ago, the door rolls free on its track now, and it will not stay down or will not come up. Whatever started it, you end up standing on your own driveway holding a car key and nothing else.

The shape of the problem changes with the age of the house. A 1962 ranch on a curved street in Sunset East has an attached garage, a wooden service door into the side yard, and a knob nobody has touched since the second owner. Springtown houses face their garages straight at the street with a keypad screwed to the trim beside them. In the Jensen Tract the garage is usually a separate building off the alley behind a 1930s bungalow, with its own hasp or its own worn cylinder. Out in Windmill Springs and Tapestry the three-car garages carry builder keypad deadbolts that all came off the same pallet. Every one of those is ordinary residential hardware and every one of them opens.

Here is the boundary, and it matters more on this page than on any other. Arroyo Key & Bolt is a locksmith. It climbs toward $225 when there is a second locked door behind the first, a high-security cylinder, a keypad bolt that has to come apart, or a detached garage and a house door in the same stop. From 8pm to midnight the plain door is $174. From midnight to 7am it is $209. That arithmetic is done before you hear a number, so nothing is added while you stand in the driveway, and no neighborhood pays more than another.

You call and say which of the three doors stopped you: the overhead door you drive through, the door from the garage into the house, or the front door you never open. The figure is settled on that call, with the evening or overnight hour counted in. The van pulls out of the Arroyo Road yard and a text names the technician and a thirty-minute window; fourteen minutes reaches downtown, eighteen reaches Sunset East, twenty-three reaches Windmill Springs, and San Ramon and Danville run past thirty. Once you are inside, throw the lock a few times while somebody is still there to watch it, because a lock that feels rough tonight will fail again in January. Pay by card or phone at the door, and the receipt lands in your email carrying the figure you were quoted.
